My move from Tamraght to Imsouane

Having spent 8 weeks in Tamraght I was ready for a change of scenery. Being a beginner surfer the next obvious place that was calling me was Imsouane. I had been told time and time again that the Imsouane wave, known for being the longest in Africa, is the perfect wave for those still finding their feet on the board. It’s a right hand beach break where you can practically walk to the line-up. With long, gentle breaking waves (conditions dependent obviously) it makes it a long boarders and beginner surfers dream surf spot.

The waves I had heard only good things about, the lifestyle here was a different matter. I had been told by tourists and Tamraght locals that 4 weeks here would be too long, with too little to do compared to Imsouanes bigger and busier neighbouring villages Tamraght or Taghzout. I suppose it is totally dependent on what you are wanting from your trip along the Moroccan coast, but so far I have yet to be lost for things to do. I love living the slow life, filling my days with early morning surfs, berber breakfasts overlooking the waves, reading, walking and hanging with friends then ending the day with a sunset surf session. It is a different lifestyle to busier villages down the coast but by no means less enjoyable.

My first impression of Imsounane was how gorgeous it was. The Bay (home to the longest wave) has a backdrop of a line of tall, sandy cliffs to the left and a quaint, lively fishing harbour the right. Where you can also choose the fish you want to eat for lunch, my first meal out in Imsouane which definitely set the bar high. The people have also been super friendly, I think it comes with the how tiny Imsouane is and so everyone you meet feels like a friend, and if you stay here long enough they may well become one, you will definitely be running into the same people. If you enjoy the calmer lifestyle, slow days of surfing, reading, chatting to shop keepers and fellow surfer’s wave-watching then Imsouane is waiting for you.
